Deer Control Plan

As the local deer population continues to expand, so do public safety concerns in the form of vehicular hazards and collisions as well as damage to property. After careful and thoughtful deliberation, the Council directed city staff to take steps to curb the growing deer population. Staff has been working with the Metro Bowhunters Resource Base to establish parameters for this hunt, the MBRB in fact being the most cost-effective method of accomplishing this reduction in population.

Anyone interested in participating in the actual hunting should become a member of the Metro Bowhunters Resource Base. No other hunting is permitted within the City of Little Canada.  We have received requests from other archers wanting to hunt within the community.  The City has chosen not to allow other hunters due to two primary factors:

1. The lack of hunt sites with sufficient size so as to not be obtrusive to neighboring property owners.

2. Our limited ability to ensure hunters are properly qualified and will follow our hunt rules.

For archers who want the opportunity to hunt in Little Canada, they will need to join MBRB for subsequent control years, assuming the City continues to use this methodology.

Deer Control Update

Taking of deer by bow and arrow was allowed again in 2014. Metro Bowhunters Resource Base conducted two weekend hunts and took three deer. The Sculley Family at 3001 Labore Road was also authorized to hunt their property this fall, subject to the State’s Archery Rules. To date, they have also taken three deer. (Of the six deer taken, two are does and four are bucks.) The Council had set the maximum number of deer to be taken at 10 and it is doubtful that number will be reached. If any additional deer are taken between now and the end of the year, a final update will occur in our next issue of this newsletter.

The deer population will be evaluated again in 2015 by an aerial survey conducted by Ramsey County.
